Dendrobium, with approximately 1580 species, is one of the most diverse genera in the orchid family. Its natural range extends from Japan south across the Pacific to Tahiti and New Zealand, and from China and India to New Guinea and Australia.

Borneo is one of several ‘hot spots’ of Dendrobium speciation. With approximately 167 named species in 15 sections, Borneo is the second most important location after New Guinea of Dendrobium speciation in Malesia. Eighty-three species, representing a selection from each of the 15 sections, are described and figured in this guide. Most occur as epiphytes in hill and lower montane forest at moderate elevation, mostly between about 900 and 1600 m. An account of all the Dendrobiums occurring in Borneo is currently in preparation.

Dendrobium, with approximately 1450 species, is one of the most diverse genera in the orchid family and the second biggest orchid genus in Southeast Asia after Bulbophyllum. Its natural range extends from Japan south across the Pacific to Tahiti and New Zealand, and from China and India to New Guinea and Australia. Centres of speciation are found in the Himalayan region, Indochina, the Malay Archipelago (especially Sumatra and Borneo), the Philippines and New Guinea. Dendrobiums have been popular with growers since the mid nineteenth century. They continue to be popular today and many beautiful hybrids have been bred.

Borneo is one of several ‘hot spots’ of Dendrobium speciation. With 167 named species in fifteen sections, as well as several others that remain to be described, Borneo is the second most important location after New Guinea of Dendrobium speciation in Malesia. Most species occur as epiphytes in hill and lower montane forest at moderate elevation, mostly between about 900 and 1600 m.

The Genus Calanthe - OB512379

Product no.: OB512379 Notify on availability
$100.00
Delivery weight: 2.3 kg

Calanthe is a widespread but predominantly tropical orchid genus, distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia from India across to Japan, north-eastern Australia and the Pacific Islands, Tahiti, tropical and South Africa, Madagascar, the islands of the Indian Ocean and in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The centre of diversity lies in Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago, while secondary centres of diversity can be found in the China and New Guinea.

Rumphius, was the first to describe and illustrate a Calanthe from Ambon, giving it the name “Flos triplicatus seu Helleborus Amboinicus”. In 1821 Robert Brown established the genus Calanthe; since then hundreds of new species have been described.

Bearing in mind the popularity of calanthes in horticulture, it is surprising that this is the first account in English of the genus to be published since 1833 when John Lindley catalogued the species.

Schlechter described many tropical species, mainly from New Guinea and the Malay Archipelago, and produced an improved classification of the genus.

In this work much of Schlechter’s classification has been maintained. It is hoped that this publication will provide a base-line of information for those making further studies of the genus. A must for those interested in this genus.

207 species are described in detail, 100 line diagrams, more than 250 colour photographs and numerous maps, charts and reproductions of original colour lithographs.

The Genus Cymbidium - OB512371

Product no.: OB512371

Book is available

Delivery Estimator Calculates delivery cost for this product

Cymbidiums are among the most important orchids in horticulture. Starting in late Victorian England, the variety of form and colour in species encouraged hybridisation that has provided a great diversity of novelties for the nursery tradeover the years. They are versatile plants, marketed as cut-flowers, buttonholes and as pot plants, producing many large, showy, long lasting flowers. The history of artificial hybridisation is discussed.

Cymbidium growing in the Far East can be traced back to the time of Confucius (about 500 BC), but the first species were only introduced to Europe from China at the end of the 18th century.  Relatively few species were seen in cultivation in Britain until the time of the Industrial Revolution, which provided both the leisure time and the money for an explosion of interest in orchid-growing.  From the mid-19th century onwards, extensive exploration and collection of new species took place.  The genus Cymbidium currently comprises some 52 species distributed throughout south and east Asia, the Malay Archipelago and northern and eastern Australia.

A revised classification of the genus and an assessment of specific delimitation and nomenclature within the genus are presented here.  The evidence from DNA data has clarified the relationships and classification of the species.  The resurgence of interest in Cymbidium species has highlighted the taxonomic questions that still remain in the genus.  The recent rush of new species names in the literature is assessed and nomenclature is clarified.

Extensive fieldwork in tropical and subtropical Asia, the Malay Archipelago and Australia has allowed the examination of many species in their wild habitats, contributing valuable information concerning the ecology, natural variation of world populations and conservation status.  Detailed conservation assessments for Cymbidium species are provided here for the first time.

Cymbidiums are easy to grow, undoubtedly one of the main reasons for their popularity in horticulture.  Suitable environmental conditions and composts for cultivation are recommended, while detailed cultivation techniques for the species are discussed by Michael Tibbs, a leading commercial orchid grower.

38 full colour paintings. 200+ maps.

Bulbophyllum is a very large genus in the orchid family, native to tropical areas, and found on all continents except Antarctica. It is a very diverse group of orchids, but all are epiphytes with creeping rhizomes, and the inflorescence always arises from the base of the pseudobulb, never from its sides or top.  Flowers vary widely from species to species.

The book is an introductory guide for amateur and advanced orchid growers.  Contains 77 colour photos; focusses on those species likely to be cultivated, including 375 Bulbophyllum species and 170 related species and hybrids; gives practical suggestions on how best to grow each plant in cultivation.
