Considered as Britain's pioneer orchidologist, whose publications on the classification, description and naming of orchids remain important.  Lindley served botany as a professor, writer and editor of The Botanical Register.  This well-illustrated volume marks the bicentenary of Lindley's birth in 1799.  It provides an interesting general account of Lindley's life, achievements and financial difficulties, supplemented with contributions by specialists on Lindley as orchidologist, horticulturist and palaeobotanist. 42 colour plates and 29 b & w sketches illustrate Lindley's skill as a botanical artist and the diversity of the orchids he studied and named.

M. Beekman was both the translator and editor for this current work.

The first section is a biography of undoubtedly one of the most important men in Australian orchidology - H.M.R. Rupp.  The second section is a collection of Rupp's memoirs edited by the author.
